When it comes to the selection and design of a suitable smoke detection system, it is basic yet fundamentally important that the design is in compliance with inter-national or local codes and standards. However, different detection types and sensing technologies installed in a given operation environment or building structure can render a fully compliant detection system impractical, resulting in a high false alarm rate, higher maintenance and service frequency (hence the higher cost) or the inability to provide enhanced detection and performance required in the context of risk management and performance-based design provisions. Compared to conventional point-type smoke detectors, the design of advanced ASD smoke detection systems are recognised as equivalent systems by international and local prescriptive codes.
In areas where ASD is used to replace point-type smoke detectors, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) can also be reduced due to non-intrusive access for maintenance, centralised service at location of the system and their general ability of connecting with almost any Fire Alarm System (FAS) for new installation or retrofit projects.
