Early Warning Fire Detection in the Danger Zone

Advanced Detection for Hazardous Areas

Classified ‘hazardous areas’ have a potentially flammable and/or explosive atmosphere. Because a fire or explosion in such circumstances would likely be catastrophic – causing loss of life or serious injury and wiping out a business – it is crucial to have in place a suitable fire detection and protection solution which adequately addresses the specific hazard profile and associated fire risks.

To ensure the high level of safety demanded in hazardous areas, two universally accepted methods of classification have been adopted: one is commonly known as Class/Division/Group, used in North America and based on NEC 500/504 (NFPA 70 [1]). The other is known as Zone/Group and is used in Europe based on IEC 60079 [2]. While hazardous areas are termed differently, the fundamental are the same, being based on the atmospheric hazards of gas, dust and fibres.

Whichever classification system you follow, fire detection needs to be highly sensitive and reliable. Additionally, the system often has to be robust enough to survive in a tough environment; not be a spark or ignition risk itself; and ideally allow for minimal maintenance in the danger zone. Securiton offers a wide variety of options for detection in hazardous areas, including Atex-rated devices for installation in the classified zone and options for ‘intrinsically safe design’ where the main console is located remotely.

Benefits of SecuriSmoke ASD for protection of hazardous areas:

  • Early and reliable smoke detection with automatic on-demand fault alarms and 5-levels of alerts and alarms
  • ASD unit and testing point can be installed away from sampling pipes and outside of hazardous and working zones
  • Optimal alarm settings supported with design tool for code compliance
  • Dynamic use of aspirating technology to address unique operating conditions

Benefits of SecuriHeat ADW for protection of hazardous areas:

  • Choice of copper, steel or teflon tubing that is resistant to harsh outdoor conditions as well as abrasion by chemicals or particles
  • Elimination of false alarms with Dynamic Heat Watch algorithm
  • Atex version available, also suitable for intrinsically safe design
  • Fully automatic system monitoring that requires minimal maintenance

Benefits of SecuriHeat d-LIST for protection of hazardous areas:

  • Individually assessable sensors for rapid localisation of heat build-ups
  • Easy installation, choice of sensor spacings, no maintenance required
  • Extremely durable cables operate in extreme environments

Benefits of SecuriBeam ILIA PRO protection of hazardous areas:

  • Triple detection precision: Detects smoke, heat and flames
  • Mounted along periphery of detection area allowing easy and cost effective maintenance
  • Covers large areas which can be hard to access with 120 m range
