Fire protection in America's longest road tunnel

The Toyo Tunnel, officially known as the ‘Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri Tunnel’, will be the longest road tunnel in the Americas. At 9.73 kilometres in length, it crosses the Cordillera Occidental and connects Giraldo with Cañasgordas in the Antioquia region. As such, it is a vital part of a road corridor that connects Medellín with Urabá.
Tunnelling began in 2018 and was completed in October 2023. The opening is planned for 2027 - a milestone for Colombian transport.
