Biometry

Basics

The term biometry derives from Greek and means "measuring biological characteristics". Each person has unique characteristics – such as voice, appearance and behaviour – by which he/she can be recognized and identified. Biometry thus authorises a person, not the owner of an ID card or PIN number, both of which may be in the wrong hands.

Biometric characteristics which today can be evaluated by sensors include fingerprint, hand geometry, face, eye, voice and signature. Biometry therefore makes it possible not only to identify (who am I?) but also to verify (am I who I claim to be?). Because biometric readers are virtually foolproof, they are being increasingly integrated into security systems.
